My Trip to Preston, S.D.

The 3,000-Mile Detour: Why I Drove Into a Blizzard for a Mystery Package

There are days when life gently nudges you down a new path, and then there are days when it shoves you behind the steering wheel in the freezing dark, points toward the horizon, and locks the doors behind you.

It started like any other quiet winter morning. I was sitting at the kitchen table nursing my first cup of coffee, half-focused on breakfast, when my wife walked in with that particular look in her eye—the one that means routine is officially suspended.

“We have a package to pick up in Preston, South Dakota,” she said casually. “Will you go pick it up, please?”

I stared at her, blinked, and ran a quick mental inventory of reality.

“That’s like a 36-hour round trip,” I replied, gesturing toward the frost-covered window. “It’s the middle of January, and our car is having problems.”

She didn’t miss a beat. “Well, it’s important. I’ll let you know what it is when you get back here with it. You should leave in 15 minutes.”

    Into the Great Unknown

Fifteen minutes later, I was reversing out of the driveway. I had a sputtering engine, a tank full of nervous energy, and absolutely no idea what was waiting for me at the end of a thousand-mile snowy gauntlet.

Looking back, that absurd, impulsive road trip was the exact dividing line between the life I was sleepwalking through and the one I was meant to live. Subzero temperatures, endless stretches of white highway, and a mysterious destination have a funny way of stripping away your excuses and showing you what you’re actually made of.

This blog is the chronicle of that journey—the mechanical breakdowns, the desolate diners at 3:00 AM, the unexpected kindness of strangers in the freezing Midwest, and the ultimate destination that changed everything.

    Buckle up. We’re heading west.
